Common Injuries & Conditions We Treat

Neck

Neck pain is a symptom of various origins. Musculoskeletal (muscles and bones) causes are by far the most common, but neck pain can also be a symptom of non-musculoskeletal sources such as infection, neoplasm, vascular disorders (carotid or vertebral arterial dissection), metabolic bone disease, inflammatory, neurological and visceral diseases, causes for your Physiotherapist must always remain vigilant for.

Common Neck Injuries & causes of Neck Pain:

  • Cervical Radiculopathy (Nerve Dysfunction or Irritation)

  • Cervicogenic Headache

  • Slipped Disc or Disc Degeneration Diseas

  • Whiplash Associated Disorders

Common Treatments for Neck Pain

  • Acute Neck Pain

  • Chronic Neck Pain

Shoulder

Shoulder injuries are a fairly common type of injury throughout an individual’s lifespan. The shoulder joint is classified as a ball and socket joint meaning it provides large degrees of movement which then predisposes it to having different types of conditions. Shoulder dislocations or instability normally affects the younger sporting population whilst degenerative conditions such as rotator cuff tears are experienced more often by the older populations.

Common Shoulder Injuries & Causes of Shoulder Pain

  • Frozen shoulder contracture syndrome

  • Rotator cuff related shoulder pain

  • Unstable Shoulder

Common Treatments of Shoulder Pain

  • Acute Shoulder Pain

  • Stiff Shoulder

  • Unstable Shoulder

Elbow

Conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Posterior Tibialis Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD), Ankle Sprains, or even Ankle and Foot Arthritis can cause pain, ranging from niggling aches, to debilitating pain affecting your quality of life.

Common Elbow Injuries & Causes of Elbow Pain

  • Referred pain from the neck i.e. cervical radicular pain (nerve dysfunction or irritation)

  • Golfer's elbow a.k.a flexor/pronator tendinopathy

    Tennis elbow a.k.a lateral epicondylalgia

Common Treatments of Elbow Pain

  • Golfer's Elbow

  • Tennis Elbow

Back

Lower back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems experienced by a large proportion of the population. Contrary to popular belief, it may not always be due to having a ‘bad’ posture or just because ‘you slept wrongly’. Back pains do not always have a definitive cause and scans for the area are usually not conclusive and may not always correlate to the clinical signs and symptoms.

Common Back Injuries & Causes

  • Acute Low Back Pain

  • Chronic Low Back Pain

  • Slipped Disc

Hip

The hip joint is another ball and socket joint on the lower half of the body which is bound tightly by thick ligaments thus making it less flexible compared to a shoulder joint. It is a freely moving weight-bearing joint meaning that over time, there may be age-related changes which may give rise to conditions such as labral tears and hip osteoarthritis. The young and active population suffers a different range of issues such as muscle tears, herniations and growth plate issues.

Common Hip Injuries & Causes

  • Deep Gluteal Syndrome

  • Gluteus Medius Tendinopathy

  • Groin Pain

Pre and Post Operation

If you are in a position where your Orthopaedic specialist has recommended a surgery for your condition, we are here to guide you through the journey from pre-surgery to going back to your usual activities. Studies show that going through pre-operative Physiotherapy improves post-surgical outcomes and shortens the recovery process. We will modify exercises for you which will best suit your current condition and ensure that you are in the best possible condition before undergoing your surgery.

Post-operative Physiotherapy can start the same or the next day and this is usually carried out by the Physiotherapist in the hospital. Following which, Physiotherapy sessions can actually begin the same week to get you moving as early as possible. Early mobility and strengthening exercises help to decrease the recovery time and ensure that we reduce post-surgical joint stiffness and muscle loss. We will also work closely with your Orthopaedic specialist to ensure that you are exercising safely and that your progress is monitored each step of the way.

Ankle

Afflictions of the foot and ankle can happen to any individual, and at any stage of life. Discomfort and pain can present in the ankle joint itself, the digits, the big toe, balls of the foot, arches and heels. Although pain in the feet and ankles sometimes disappear by themselves, oftentimes they persist, forcing us to reduce our activities, and affect our quality of life. One of the issues with leaving foot and ankle pain untreated, is that it can have a knock-on effect on the other parts of our lower limb. Pain and discomfort could mean that we may be reluctant to put weight through the foot, and our functioning can change.

Common Ankle Injuries & Causes

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Ankle Sprains

  • Ligament Injuries of Thumb and Fingers

  • Plantar Heel Pain

  • Tibialis Posterior Tendinopathy

Modalities and Electrotherapy

During the course of your physiotherapy session, our physiotherapist might use one or more treatment modalities to assist in improving recovery outcomes or to help reduce pain and swelling especially after a surgical procedure or an acute incident. These modalities include machines such as ultrasound therapy, shockwave therapy or muscle stimulation units. They utilise different methods such as sound waves, electric currents, heat or cold temperatures to bring about a decrease in healing time and pain levels, better muscle adaptations to eventually achieve a better recovery outcome for your condition.

Some of the modalities used by our Physiotherapists include:

  • Blood Flow Restriction

  • NMES

  • Taping

  • TENS

  • Shockwave Therapy

  • Ultrasound Therapy

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is a specialised area of Physiotherapy dealing with conditions relating to the muscle, bone and joints of the human body. Through a detailed history taking and physical assessment, the Physiotherapist aims to determine the root cause of your problem and create a treatment for your condition. Treatment may include the use of different therapeutic devices and manual therapy to assist with alleviating pain and clients will be sent home with a comprehensive exercise program to achieve the best outcomes possible.

Sports Physiotherapy

Sports Physiotherapy is an area of Physiotherapy mainly dealing with bone, muscle or ligament injuries sustained during sports or conditions which are hindering sporting participation or performance. It is tailored to assist individuals who are keen to get back into their sporting activities after sustaining an injury or after having a surgery.

Here at The Rehab Centre, we pride ourselves in having a space where sporting movements can be thoroughly analysed and proper rehabilitation programs can be carried out to ensure excellent outcomes. We also have a full gym setup and various sporting equipment to keep sessions challenging and engaging!

Common Foot & Lower Limb Conditions We Treat

Skins and Nails

Infections of the skin can include either a viral verruca infection, or fungal tinea infection. Verruca infections may have the same appearance with calluses and corns, but do have several distinguishing factors. Fungal infections of the foot are caused by a common type of fungi called dermatophytes. Common areas of fungal infections include in between the toes, and plantar surface of the foot. These skin infections are contagious and are often spread from communal areas – such as showers or swimming pools.

Nail conditions are also commonly seen by our Podiatrist. Nail conditions such as Nail Fungus
(Onychomycosis) or Ingrown Nails
(Onychocryptosis) can be troublesome, painful, and in some cases, dangerous due to the possibility of secondary infections.

Skin and Nail conditions seen by our Podiatrist includes:

  • Foot Calluses and Corns

  • Verrucae (Plantar Warts)

  • Tinea Pedis

  • Fungal Toenails (Onychomycosis)

  • Ingrown Nails (Onychocryptosis)

Diabetic Foot

Diabetes is a systemic condition that affects the whole body. Not only does it have significant physical impacts on individuals, it comes at a heavy financial burden as well. It is a serious condition, that Singapore never declared war on anything or anyone, but Diabetes. Diet restriction, medications and Insulin are common strategies that we think of when it comes to managing Diabetes. However, we do not actively think of Lower Limb preventative care and management.

Podiatry is an important part of your Diabetes health care team. Podiatrists are specialised professionals to assess the health of your feet, identify risk factors that can cause complications, perform treatment if needed, and come up with a management plan in place to reduce the risk of lower limb complications from Diabetes.

Diabetes related lower limb conditions can potentially be missed because of the absence of symptoms at times.
Initial signs may include:

  • Diminished or reduced sensation in your toes and feet

  • Numbness, burning, pins and needles, electric shock sensations

  • Pain or cramping in your calves, thighs or buttocks when walking, and goes away when you stop

Pain and discomfort could mean that we may be reluctant to put weight through the foot, and our functioning can change.

Common conditions of the foot and ankle include:

  • Ankle Sprains & Pain

  • Bunions

  • Metatarsalgia (Forefoot Pain)

  • Sesamoiditis

  • Morton’s Neuroma

  • Pes Cavus (High arches)

  • Pes Planus (Flat Feet)

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Lower Limb

Injuries to our lower limb can stem from different origins. Tissues such as tendons, ligaments, insertions of these structures, bones, vasculature or nerves, can be the source of pain to the lower limb. Depending on the cause of pain, it can affect either one leg, or even both legs. At times, these injuries can either have an acute or overuse cause.

Overuse injuries to the lower limb generally develop over time, and are often not linked to a specific instigating incident. These injuries often can be prevented through a combination of activity modification, physical therapy, and addressing postural or lower limb biomechanical deficits.

Common conditions that may cause pain and discomfort experienced in the lower limb include:

  • Achilles Tendinopathy/Tendinitis

  • Posterior Tibialis Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)

  • Peroneal Tendinopathy/Tendinitis

  • Limb Length Discrepancy

Meet Our Principal Podiatrist

Daniel Wong

Principal Podiatrist

  • Daniel was a recipient of Singapore General Hospital’s Scholarship for Podiatry in 2011. Upon his graduation, he began his career in one of the ranked best Hospitals in the world – Singapore General Hospital. During his six year stint in Public Healthcare, he worked closely with Doctors and Surgeons in medical fields of Orthopaedics, Vascular Surgery, and Endocrinology. This allowed him to work with a diverse group of patients, from young children, athletes, working adults, to the elderly. It also enabled him to develop valuable Podiatric clinical skills and knowledge in these areas.

Despite a varied caseload in a tertiary healthcare setting, Daniel was heavily involved with musculoskeletal Podiatry and lower limb biomechanics. His interest in lower limb biomechanics stemmed from his own injuries from competitive participation in various sports, such as Rugby, Soccer and Sprinting. This allowed the development of a specific empathy to treat such musculoskeletal injuries.

Daniel graduated with First Class Honours in Podiatry from the University of South Australia, Adelaide. Through his academic journey, he received Merit awards every year as well as the Chancellor’s Letter of Commendation for his academic achievements. His research and collaboration with experts on Knee Osteoarthritis also earned him High Distinction in his Thesis, and a publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Being a firm believer of improvement through continuous education, Daniel was the only SGH Podiatrist certified in clinical education, awarded by the Academic Medicine Education Institute. Due to his passion in Musculoskeletal Podiatry and aptitude in clinical education, he was further entrusted to be the clinical mentor and to supervise the development of junior Podiatrists, aspiring Podiatrists, and overseas Podiatry students on clinical placements.

To seek a deeper purpose in what he was tasked to do, Daniel embarked on his full time studies in Public Health, while performing his role as a full time clinician. This earned him his Masters’ in Public Health from the National University of Singapore, Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. His training allowed him to amalgamate public health disciplines, together with his clinical skills, to achieve desirable clinical outcomes for his patients.

Inspiration – This is the anchor behind Daniel’s practice. Daniel recognises that he is in a privileged position as a clinician to inspire patients and help them alleviate pain and lead better lives. He enjoys working together with his patients, within his power, to achieve their goals. His genuine care earned recognition and gratitude from patients, as Daniel has the distinction of being the first and only Podiatrist to date, to achieve the highest possible hospital-wide recognition for consistent high quality service to patients – the SGH CEO Service Award.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We strive towards providing a pain-free experience for you. Generally, all treatments are painless. However, depending on the kind of treatment done, you may experience some transient mild discomfort, which is short-lasting and tolerable.

Our Podiatrist will ensure that you remain as comfortable as possible during the duration of your treatment. It is vital that you provide your Podiatrist with constant feedback so that we can deliver the most pleasant experience possible for you.

  • Not at all. Simply call our clinic at 6282 7088, or email us at bedok@1doc.sg to make an appointment. We will confirm your appointment before you head down to our clinic.

However, if you have a referral from a Doctor or any health professional, please let us know when you make your appointment, and bring the letter along when you come for your appointment.

  • You may help us by bringing a list of your medications and medical/surgical history (so we can provide an accurate diagnosis and plan) and your most commonly worn footwear – especially your sport shoes – so that our Podiatrist can assess them and recommend appropriate footwear if needed,

Please also bring along any referral letters, lab reports, or any diagnostic imaging reports from doctors or hospitals related to your lower limb concerns.

If your lower limb concern arises when you walk or do exercise, please wear, or bring along, a pair of shorts or ¾ Bermudas to help ease our assessment.

  • A consultation with our Podiatrist may last from 30 mins up to 1 hour, depending on the amount of treatment that needs to be done, as well as your progress.

  • Your Podiatrist will first have an initial consultation with you to find out your condition and provide you with a diagnosis. Following this, your Podiatrist will then recommend suitable treatment options and work with you towards a tailored treatment plan for your recovery.

Before commencing treatment, your podiatrist will advise you on the costs associated as well as the involved timelines, and getting your consent before proceeding with the treatment.

  • At The Rehab Centre, we want you to live without pain, and enjoy all the activities that you love. Feet and lower limb injuries oftentimes limit what you can do. Having a Podiatrist, who is a specialist in treatment of this part of your body, helps you enjoy a better quality of life.

By having both Podiatry and Physiotherapy, we can offer you appropriate effective treatment regardless of the cause. For example, a Physiotherapist might treat someone with a lower limb injury. However if the injury is recurrent, the physiotherapist might consult with a Podiatrist to look at the foot function, prescribe corrective foot orthotics, or identify other factors contributing to the frequency of the injury.

On the other hand, the Podiatrist will ask a Physiotherapist for their advice if they believe the cause of ongoing lower limb problems is due to something higher up in the body.

This collaborative approach ensures that you’re in the right hands regardless of the cause.
